Barnsley eliminated Middlesbrough in the opening round of the EFL Cup last season and will be aiming for similar progress as they host Tranmere Rovers this August.

The Reds last faced the League Two Rovers in this competition in 1999 and have not lost to the Birkenhead-based side since 2004 in any match.
