Celtic will want to maintain their monopoly on the Premier Sports Cup when they face St Mirren at Hampden this December.

The Hoops saw off Old Firm rivals Rangers 3-1 after extra-time in the semi-final, under Martin O’Neill’s watch, to reach the competition’s showpiece for the eighth time in 10 years.

Celtic, who have also eliminated Falkirk and Patrick Thistle on the road back to the national stadium, are aiming to etch their name upon the prestigious trophy for a 23rd time.

It could also prove to be an early piece of silverware for new boss Wilfried Nancy, after recently joining from MLS’s Columbus Crew. Yet they underestimate St Mirren at their peril. Under Stephen Robinson’s renaissance, the Buddies are hungry for success. They eliminated Heart of Midlothian and Kilmarnock, before a convincing last-four victory over Motherwell earned a place in the final for the first time since winning the competition in 2013.

St Mirren, who haven’t beaten Celtic since 2022 across all competitions, will be dreaming of an upset and etching their name onto the cup for just the second time in their history, having been runners-up in 1955/56 and 2009/10.
