Middlesbrough booked a Championship play-off semi-final showdown with in-form Southampton this month as they aim to reach Wembley for the first time since 2015.

The Teessiders spent 35 of 46 matchdays in the second-tier’s automatic promotion spots, only for a seven-game winless streak across March and April to derail their progress. Kim Hellberg’s side ended the campaign unbeaten in four to clinch fifth spot and book a two-legged meeting with Saints, and they will hope to end a play-off hoodoo that has seen them fall at this stage in 2023, 2018, 2015 and 1991. 

Southampton are the division’s in-form side, on a 19-game unbeaten run, yet Boro will take solace from the fact that they were 4-0 victors when the sides met at Riverside Stadium in early January and have not lost to the Saints on home soil since 2017.
